What Conditions Could Prevent Me From Giving Birth with MBC?
Minnesota Birth Center provides care for healthy, low-risk pregnancies. To ensure your safety and support the birth you desire, here’s what you need to know.
Conditions That Exclude Eligibility
Chronic Medical Conditions (Pre-Pregnancy)
MBC does not accept clients with any of the following:
- Heart disease
- Blood clots
- Bleeding/clotting disorders (excluding Heterozygous Factor V Leiden)
- Symptomatic congenital heart defects
- Kidney disease
- Diabetes mellitus
- Hyperthyroidism (Grave’s disease)
- Essential hypertension (BP >140/90 before 20 weeks)
- Sickle cell anemia
- HIV positive
- Hepatitis B or C positive
- Marfan’s Syndrome (including immediate family history)
- Epilepsy
- Active tuberculosis
- Lupus
- Active eating disorders (within 1 year prior to conception)
- Bicornate uterus
- Uterine fibroids 5cm or larger
- Thalassemias
- Previous Rh sensitization
- History of more than 2 previous cesarean births or any cesarean with a verical/classical incision
Substance Use
- Current drug or alcohol use (must be actively quitting)
- Any positive drug screen in the third trimester will require transfer
BMI Restrictions
- BMI > 45 with a previous vaginal birth
- BMI > 40 with no prior vaginal birth
Conditions That May Arise During Pregnancy
If any of these occur, you will be referred to a hospital-based provider:
- Gestational Diabetes requiring medication
- Hemoglobin <10 g/dL at birth
- Declining gestational diabetes screening/testing
- Multiple gestation (twins, triplets, etc.)
- Planned breech birth
- Two or more blood pressure readings >140/90 during pregnancy
- Fetal growth restriction
- High or low amniotic fluid volume
- Cholestasis of pregnancy
- Development of any other severe obstetrical, medical or surgical condition
Case-by-case Considerations
MBC may consider care under certain circumstances:
- History of preterm birth <34 weeks
- History of lap band surgery or gastric bypass
- Gestation >22 weeks with no prenatal care
- History of seizure disorders, only if:
- Seizures were resolved due to a specific avoidable stimulus
- No seizure activity in over 10 years
- No medication required
- No seizures during puberty
Ongoing Monitoring
MBC midwives will continuously monitor your health to:
- Identify concerns early
