What to Expect at a Birth Center

Birth centers are an, put simply, empowering space for women. It is a place where they can come and take control of their health, pregnancy, birth, and well-woman care. At Minnesota Birth Center, we are devoted to evidence-based care, which means we follow policies and procedures based on proven scientific evidence from medical research and peer-reviewed journals. We want all of our families to be informed and confident in all of their options.

The care at Minnesota Birth Center trusts the process of growth, birth, and aging, nurtures your family, and honors the changes you are experiencing.

If you decide to have a birth center birth, you can expect to have individualized care with Certified Nurse-Midwives and Registered Nurses along with other expert partners to provide a full spectrum of care ranging from gynecological services, family planning, and birth control, to prenatal and postpartum care, lactation support, perinatal consultations, and ultrasonography.

Here are other things you can expect at a birth center!

Homelike setting

Birth centers are set up to feel more like a home and less like a hospital. Our center is inviting and peaceful, with family-friendly facilities designed to make you feel comfortable. A few ways we do that are by providing family beds, in-suite restrooms and showers, homey kitchens, and even fresh bread baked right after birth and served with butter and honey!

Longer appointment times

We build a relationship of trust with each other, sharing information and decision-making. Your midwife will meet you at the front door when you come in for your appointments. The first pregnancy appointment is an hour-long, with returning prenatal visits scheduled for thirty minutes each.

Low intervention

Midwifery is founded on the premise that pregnancy and birth are normal, physiologic events in a woman’s life that leave a profound impact. At the Minnesota Birth Center, our approach when caring for you is guided by our belief that women should have the opportunity and support to plan for natural and empowering experiences in a safe and soothing environment.

In order to achieve this, we offer a wide variety of comfort and coping measures including:

  • Water birth pools in each of our birth suites
  • Birth balls
  • Birthing stools
  • Labor slings
  • Aromatherapy
  • Postpartum herbal baths
  • And more!
Active role in your pregnancy

You have a say in your care. This can include things like where and when you labor, whether that is in a birthing tub or on a birthing ball. We listen to you and your birth plan and put them into action as best we can so that you have a safe, empowering birth experience that is best for you and your family.
